Linux Mint is based off of Ubuntu, so I expected a quite similar operating system, as I'm currently using Ubuntu. Mint has received much hype in the Linux community, and I've heard many good things about it. People have told me that it is much easier to use than Ubuntu, and that it looks better. So, I fired up the ol' CD burner, and burned a copy of Linux Mint Daryna. (GNOME) I popped the CD into my old craptop, and off I went. The first CD bootup screen was quite beautiful, although not as great as the unsurpassed openSUSE boot screen, it was a lot better than the Ubuntu's bootup screen. I was surprised that the LiveCD still ran as quickly as it did on 192 MB of RAM, and was also surprised when the install took 38 minutes, rather than the usual 40-60 minutes that Ubuntu did. Linux Mint also didn't have the Ubuntu "n00b partition" bug, in which if Ubuntu didn't recognize your partition table as a Linux one, it would frequently refuse to boot, giving you a message about a GNOME failure.
After installing Daryna, I was presented with a magnificent-looking theme, which reminded me of the green theme of openSUSE. This Linux distribution required the least amount of time of configuration to make it "work," my wireless card was already recognizeds, the wireless network manager was up and running, and all the usual applications were installed-
Firefox
GIMP
Pidgin
XChat
OpenOffice
There also were many cool applications not included with Ubuntu, like the update manager. It gave the risk levels of each upgrade, as well as what each upgrade does. This is a nice improvement over Ubuntu's update manager, but the downloads all went at 50-90 KB/S, probably because Linux Mint has no USA servers...
Now then, onto the most important part, in my opinion- performance. Linux Mint was incredibly fast for a GNOME-based distro on 192 MB of RAM, and every application opened within 5 seconds on the first bootup. The login took no time at all, and the startup was a tad faster than Ubuntu, but slower than my Windows XP computer. It was also much faster than Vista's startup.

Final Thoughts-
If you're an Ubuntu user who wants to try something different, or if you're a Windows user migrating to Linux, this distribution is definitely for you. However, for all you terminal geeks, this distribution would be too user friendly for you. (Is that even possible?)
Final score-

Eye candy- 5/5
Performance- 5/5
Install- 4/5
Upgrades- 3/5
Overall- 4/5

Here are some screenshots- http://www.linuxmint.com/screenshots.php

PS-
I decided to keep Linux Mint as my default operating system, bibi Ubuntu!

Welcome, We Hope You Enjoy Your Stay

Hey there, I guess this is my first blog post... I'm George. I'm the typical "geek" (heh heh) I own a very bad laptop, which I call a "craptop." (Another heh heh just for good measure.) I'll be doing the usual- blogging about Linux, blogging about computers, and ranting about life. I'm currently running Linux Mint 4.0, but I switch operating systems almost monthly. It's quite addicting! This provides a breeding ground of reviews.
